  • Sometimes local suppliers also repair some parts of the grid, so they supply less electricity in some sectors of the zone.
  • During severe weather conditions, we also want more electricity that cannot match the supply. As a result, suppliers provide less electricity in the zone.
  • Sometimes accidental power outages can also result in brownouts.

However, these occurrences depend on the country. In some parts of the world, blackout or drown out our use interchangeably.

Effects of Brownout

During brownout or blackout, various electrical appliances react differently. Some appliances work less effectively; others may completely shut down. Some heaters may adapt to the energy consumption and regulate the voltage accordingly. Here is a list of appliances and how they react.

Water Heater

In the case of a water heater or induction oven, this small reduction in voltage may increase water heating time.

Incandescent Bulbs

In the case of incandescent light bulbs, the light can be bright to dim because of the less voltage in the filament. In such a case, overuse may damage the appliances.

Electric Motors

Electric motors convert AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current). Modern electric motors adapt to the voltage changes, but most of the motors cannot adapt to it and cause major harm.

Due to lesser speed, electromotive force generates reduced armature speed. It leads to overheating and may burn out the system due to a lack of cooling capacity.

During the blackout or brownout, the generators automatically power on and supply the required electricity in the area.

We have seen rolling blackouts or electricity crises in California between 2000-2001. The deregulation policies disrupt the electricity market.

Sometimes blackouts are necessary to secure the public from unwanted accidents such as gas leaks or electrocution during flood damage. Sometimes poorly maintained power lines may cause disaster.
