4 Differences between Pond Pump and Fountain Pump?

A colorful fountain or serene pond enhances the beauty of your property. If you are fond of decoration, then you must install a solar fountain on your premises. It distinguishes your house in the locality. However, many people have doubts regarding pond pumps and fountain pumps. Is there any difference between pond pump and fountain pump? In short, both of these pumps work in a very similar way, but there is a core difference between the two systems. In this article, I am going to tell you about the differences between a solar pond pump and a fountain pump.

Pond Pump vs. Fountain Pump: The Difference

The pond and fountain may seem to be a similar system, but the main differences are:

  • Difference in System
  • Strength of the Pumps
  • Difference in Horsepower
  • Costs of the Machine

These four are the main differences between these two items. You can find many other differences based on these four factors. In short, if you want to buy a pond pump or a fountain pump, you have to focus on horsepower and GPH. Please do not confuse when you find more GPH pond pumps and fewer GPH fountain pumps. It mainly depends on your requirements, such as the structure of the pool, the gallon of water it needs, the design of the fountain, how long you will run the system, and so on.

Difference in System

A pond does not need the force of a fountain. A pond pump is mainly manufactured to circulate the water in a pond. In contrast, a fountain pump is manufactured to flow the water to the top level of the orifice. It circulates the water in a different way. It is more of an advanced design that requires more power, so the structure of the pumps is different. However, it depends on the brand.  |

Strength of the Pumps

These two pumps are designed for two purposes, so a fountain pump needs more GPH (Gallon Per Hour) than a pond. Fountains need more strength to push the water to the top level of the system, whereas ponds need less energy to circulate the water at the ground level.

That is why if you are buying a pond pump, you do not need a high GPH machine. You can find GPH in the specification section if you are buying online. Otherwise, you can find it in a package or consult with a local store owner for better guidance.

Difference in Horsepower

As you know, fountains need more power because they have to push the water to the ‘pumping height’ depending on how tall your fountain is. If it is a small fountain, it needs less horsepower and GPH. Ponds need less horsepower compared to fountains.

Costs of the Machine

If you need more power, you have to pay a higher price. At the lower level, both the machine prices are similar, but if you need a better solar fountain pump, especially a large/tall item, you have to pay more than a pond pump.

My Review

I have a solar fountain that comes with an inbuilt pump that works with the help of a solar panel. The problem with the product is it cannot run in darkness or in the absence of sunlight. Although if you want a solar fountain, you can buy a better product where you will get a battery backup with the system. The battery stores energy during the daytime and runs the fountain even at night.

I have provided a general idea between these two pumps, but please consult with an expert in your locality before buying a pump for your fountain or pond.
